Hyperpigmentation is defined as any abnormal increase in genetically programmed skin pigmentation. There are many factors that may contribute to changes in skin color or uneven pigmented patches, but the most common are sun damage, acne lesions and hormonal changes. The most common hyperpigmentation conditions include freckles, spots and discolored areas from sun exposure, melasma, flat and pigmented areas secondary to acne lesions.
